The state of California is the largest state in the United States and is also the state with the highest population. Because of this high population, it is to be expected that the number of social problems witnessed or experienced within the state must be much higher than those in other parts of the country. This assertion is especially true for drug and alcohol addiction.
The state has one of the highest prevalence rates of drug and alcohol addiction in the United States. The extensive efforts of drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers are a clear testimony to the prevalence of this problem. The main question at this point is the question of why the prevalence of drug and alcohol addiction is so high in this state.
The first and most obvious reason which has already been sated in the ongoing discussion is the fact that California is the largest state in the US and has the largest population. Substance addiction problems, just like most other social problems, are directly proportional to the total population. The greater the total population, the greater the volume of addicts. It is essentially this large number of addicts that justifies the amount of rehabilitation centers in California.
There are a number of other factors that can contribute significantly to the rise in the number of people affected by addiction in California. Some of the major factors that are common to the largest proportion of addicts are listed below.
- The celebrity lifestyles adopted by citizens and residents of the city. California is home to many celebrities in the entertainment industry. It is the home of Hollywood, which is the greatest film-making arena in the world. Most celebrities have lifestyles that involve drug abuse and the habit tends to rub off on fans who begin by imitating the lifestyles of their favorite celebrities. The result of such endeavors is inevitably addiction.
- California is the home of a number of the largest cities in the United States. It is within this state that large cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles are located. The large cities are known to be the headquarters of some of the most extensive drug cartels in the country. As a direct result, addictive drugs such as cocaine and heroin tend to be more readily accessible than in other parts of the country due to the close proximity of suppliers. This accessibility of drugs has led to a significant increase in the total number of addicts in the state, creating an even greater need for efficient rehabilitation centers in California.
There are other additional factors that have increased the problems of addiction and increased the need for drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers in California but these are not as strong.
